Getting Ashore

Most ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to Duong Dong harbour — a 10-15 minute boat ride that lands you steps from the main market and town.

Getting Ashore at Phu Quoc

  • 1
Tender to Duong DongThe majority of cruise ships anchor offshore and operate tenders to Duong Dong harbour in the island's main town. Tenders run continuously during the port day.
  • 2
Or dock at the new international pierLarger vessels (Costa, NCL and others) may dock at the Phu Quoc International Passenger Port, opened February 2024. From here, a taxi or shuttle is required — it is not walkable to attractions.
  • 3
Use Grab for taxisDownload the Grab app (Southeast Asia's Uber) before arrival. It's cheap, reliable, and eliminates fare disputes with street taxis. Essential for getting around the large island.
  • 4
Mind your return timeTraffic builds in late afternoon. If you venture north (Grand World) or south (cable car), allow at least 90 minutes to get back to the tender pier.

💡 Pro move: If you land at An Thoi in the south, you are in an industrial port area — take a taxi immediately; nothing is walkable.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Phu Quoc is primarily a tender port at Duong Dong, though the new 2024 international pier now handles larger ships on the island's east coast.

Insider Tips

  • 📱
Download Grab before you arrive. It's the Uber of Southeast Asia — fixed prices, no haggling, and available island-wide. Far cheaper and safer than flagging street taxis.
  • 💵
Carry Vietnamese Dong cash. Local markets, street food stalls and most taxis only accept VND. ATMs are plentiful in Duong Dong town; withdraw before heading to the south or north.
  • Pick one region and commit. Phu Quoc is large. Going south for the cable car AND north for Grand World in one day is too ambitious — traffic will catch you. Choose one.
  • 🏯
Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Dinh Cau Temple and Ho Quoc Pagoda both require modest dress. Carry a light scarf or sarong.
  • 🐟
Try Bún Quậy — the island's signature dish. Fresh rice noodles, squid, and a DIY dipping sauce of kumquat, sugar, salt and chili. Bún Quậy Kiến Xây on Duong Dong's main strip is the classic spot.
