Le Marché (Papeete Market)
The two-storey covered market is the beating heart of Papeete — ground floor overflows with tropical fruit, fish, and flower crowns (ei); upper level is packed with black pearls, pareos, and handicrafts. Go early for the best atmosphere.
After dark (and some evenings during port days), the waterfront square fills with food trucks — les roulottes — serving poisson cru, crepes, grilled meats, and chow mein at local prices. A true Papeete institution.
Tahiti's lagoon shelters coral gardens and tropical fish just offshore. Half-day boat tours from Papeete take you to prime snorkel spots, often including a stop at a black-pearl farm.
The historic lighthouse where Captain Cook observed the 1769 transit of Venus sits on a black-sand spit at the northern tip of Tahiti, ringed by a pleasant park and beach. About 15 km from the port.
