Insider Tips

  • 💶
Euro since 2023. Croatia adopted the Euro in January 2023. Cards are accepted widely, but carry a little cash for the Kompa ferry, tram tickets (~€1.50), and market stalls.
  • 🦟
Mosquitoes in summer. Proximity to the Kopački Rit wetlands means heavy mosquito activity June–August, especially at dusk. Pack repellent if visiting then.
  • 🍷
Try Graševina. Slavonia's signature white wine is excellent and inexpensive locally. A bottle from a Tvrđa wine shop makes the perfect souvenir.
  • 🌶️
Order Fiš Paprikaš. The regional spicy river-fish stew is Osijek's signature dish — try it at Kod Ruže in Tvrđa or on the Galija floating restaurant.
  • 🚃
Ride the tram. Osijek's red-and-white vintage trams are the oldest tram system in Croatia (since 1884). A short ride is fun and cheap — buy tickets from the driver or a Tisak kiosk.
