Decebalus Rock Sculpture

At 55 metres, this is the tallest rock sculpture in Europe — a carving of the last Dacian king's face into the cliff above the Danube, completed in 2004 after a decade of work. Best seen from the water, about 18 km downriver. Shore-accessible via taxi or coach excursion.

Culture

Mraconia Monastery

Often called 'the monastery under the water' — the original was submerged by the Iron Gates dam in 1970. The rebuilt monastery sits right on the river's edge beneath dramatic cliffs, and is a standard stop on gorge boat tours.

Culture

Roman Catholic Church of Orsova

A striking piece of communist-era architecture (1972–76) — the only Catholic church permitted to be built in Romania under Ceausescu. Its tent-shaped roof and expressionist interior paintings (controversially including John Lennon and Lenin in the Way of the Cross) make it genuinely unique.

History

Ada Kaleh — The Drowned Island

Before 1970, a tiny Turkish island 3 km downriver from Orsova was home to an ethnic Turkish community, duty-free bazaars, and legendary Turkish delight. It was deliberately flooded when the Iron Gates dam was built. Ask at local restaurants and the dock-side kiosks for historic photographs — locals still speak of it with deep nostalgia.

Insider Tips

  • 🚤
Book the boat tour first. Gorge speedboat operators at the dock have limited capacity. If your ship doesn't offer the excursion, head there the moment you disembark.
  • 💵
Carry Romanian Leu (RON). Taxis and small vendors expect local currency. Some boat operators take euros, but the rate may be less favorable. ATMs are in the town center.
  • 📷
The Decebalus carving is best from the water. The shore vantage points offer limited angles. A boat tour gives you the full 55-metre face dead-on.
  • ☀️
Gorge light is best mid-morning. Sun hits the cliff face and the Mraconia Monastery front by 10–11am on most days. Late afternoon can be shadowy in the narrows.
  • 🏛
The 'new' town is only 50 years old. The original medieval Orsova is submerged beneath the Danube. The modern town was entirely purpose-built in the 1970s — a fact that explains the wide streets and socialist-era architecture.
