Getting Ashore

How you arrive depends entirely on your ship's size — expedition and mid-size vessels dock; larger ocean ships anchor out and tender.

Getting Ashore in Nuuk

  • 1
Small / expedition ships — Ny AtlantkajShips under roughly 200 m dock at the Ny Atlantkaj cargo quay. The city center is about 2.5 km away — exposed industrial road with hills. Take the ship's shuttle or a taxi (Nuuk Taxi: +299 32 12 12).
  • 2
Large ships — anchor & tenderLarge cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the pontoon at Skonnertkajen in the inner Colonial Harbor. You step off right in the historic district — no transfer needed.
  • 3
Getting around townThe city is walkable once you reach the center. Nuup Bussii local buses (Lines 1–3, contactless card payment) connect the harbor, downtown, and suburbs. Taxis are available but scarce when a large ship is in port.

💡 Pro move: Greenland is NOT part of the EU/EEA for mobile roaming — data charges can be extreme. Disable roaming before arrival and use café Wi-Fi instead.

Insider Tips

  • 📱
Kill your data roaming. Greenland is not in the EU roaming zone — charges can hit $10–15 per MB. Switch to airplane mode and use café/ship Wi-Fi only.
  • 💳
Cards work everywhere — Visa and Mastercard are accepted at virtually all shops, restaurants, and taxis. Pay in DKK, not your home currency, to avoid conversion fees.
  • 🧥
Dress for Arctic wind. Summer temperatures average 5–10 °C (41–50 °F) but wind chill makes it feel much colder. A windproof outer shell, mid-layer, hat, and gloves are essential even in July.
  • 🛒
Tupilak carvings are the signature souvenir — small mythical figures carved from bone, antler, or stone. If buying genuine marine mammal bone, ensure the seller provides an export certificate (required for customs).
  • 🚌
Tender passengers land in the best spot. The Colonial Harbor tender pier puts you right in the historic district. Ship-shuttle passengers from the cargo quay should book the shuttle early — it fills fast.
