Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Nuremberg's industrial harbor on the Main-Danube Canal — a 5.5 km ride from the historic center, so you'll need a shuttle or taxi.

Getting from the Pier to the Old Town

    Public TransitWalk ~10–15 min from the dock to the Rotbuchenstraße bus stop and take Bus 67 to Frankenstraße U-Bahn station, then the U1 line to Lorenzkirche (heart of the Old Town) or Hauptbahnhof. Buy a day pass from the machine.

💡 Pro move: The walk from port to Old Town is ~5.5 km through an industrial area with no pedestrian-friendly path — don't attempt it on foot.

Memorium Nuremberg Trials (Courtroom 600)

The actual courtroom where the International Military Tribunal tried Nazi leaders in 1945–1946. After serving as a working courtroom for decades, it was retired from active court use in 2020 and is now fully open to visitors as part of the Memorium. The museum upstairs provides powerful context. Plan 1.5–2 hours.

Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg)

The skyline-defining fortress that served as the seat of Holy Roman Emperors for centuries. The views from the terrace over the red-roofed Altstadt are free; the castle museum and Deep Well add depth for €7.

Old Town Walk: Hauptmarkt to Weissgerbergasse

Start at the Gothic Schöner Brunnen fountain (spin the brass ring!), walk a couple of minutes to St. Sebald Church, then continue toward Weissgerbergasse — Nuremberg's most beautiful street of half-timbered houses that survived WWII intact.

Nazi Party Rally Grounds & Documentation Center

The unfinished Congress Hall, designed to hold 50,000, now houses a sobering museum documenting the Third Reich's rise and fall. An interim exhibition runs while the main building undergoes long-term renovation.

Albrecht Dürer's House

Hauptmarkt to Kaiserburg Loop

~2 km · 45-60 min · Easy with one steep climb

Start at the Hauptmarkt, admire the Schöner Brunnen fountain and spin the brass ring for luck. Head north up Burgstraße past St. Sebald Church to the Imperial Castle for panoramic views. Return via Weissgerbergasse for the best half-timbered streetscape in the city.

Way of Human Rights to Germanic National Museum

    Wear sturdy shoes. The Altstadt is heavily cobbled and the climb to Kaiserburg is steep. Sandals will make for a miserable afternoon.
  • 🚌
    Know your shuttle times. The ship is on a lock schedule — missing the last return shuttle could mean an expensive taxi and an awkward re-boarding. Write the "all aboard" time on your hand.
  • 💶
    Carry cash. Street sausage kiosks, small bakeries, and market stalls are cash-only. Cards work at museums and restaurants. ATMs are plentiful in the Old Town.
  • 🛍️
    Shops close on Sundays. If your port day falls on a Sunday, grocery stores and souvenir shops will be shut — but restaurants, museums, and churches stay open. Plan accordingly.
  • 🍪
    Buy Elisenlebkuchen at Lebkuchen-Schmidt. These EU-protected gingerbread rounds (≥25% nuts, almost no flour) are far superior to anything you'll find at home. They travel well and make ideal gifts.
