Insider Tips

  • 🗣️
French is the working language. Menus, signs, and staff in smaller businesses are French-only. A few basic phrases go a long way; tourist sites near the waterfront have more English.
  • 💵
CFP Francs are fixed to the Euro. Cards work in most shops and restaurants, but carry some XPF cash for markets, buses, and small cafés. ATMs are available near the pier.
  • 🌡️
Tropical heat year-round. Noumea is hot and humid; reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and water are essential. The dry season (May–October) is the most comfortable for cruise calls.
  • 🐠
Don't skip the lagoon. New Caledonia's UNESCO-listed lagoon is world-class — even a short snorkel off Amédée Island or a glass-bottom boat trip is unforgettable.
  • 🚕
Taxis are the easiest way around. The local Kaar'Bus network is inexpensive but can be slow; taxis are plentiful near the pier and are the quickest way to the beaches and Tjibaou Centre.
