Getting Ashore at Nordkapp

  • 1
Disembark in HonningsvågMost ships berth at Storkaia or Holmen pier, right in the town center. Walk-off in minutes. Very large ships may anchor and tender to a floating pier — check ship announcements.
  • 2
Get to the North Cape plateauThe plateau is 34 km north — about a 40-45 minute drive through Arctic tundra. Options: cruise line shore excursion (buses wait at the pier), local Route 406 bus (cheaper, pre-book), private tour operators like Bluetours or Arctic Guide Service, or a rental car (Hertz and Europcar in town — book months ahead).
  • 3
Allow enough timeBudget at least 4 hours for a DIY plateau visit: 1.5 hrs round-trip driving, 2+ hrs on the plateau. If your call is a midnight-sun evening stop, the plateau in soft golden light at midnight is extraordinary.
  • 4
Reindeer on the roadAround 5,000 reindeer graze on Magerøya island in summer. Expect them on the E69 highway — drive carefully and enjoy the spectacle.

💡 Pro move: Fog can blanket the plateau in minutes. Check the live webcam at the Honningsvåg tourist office before heading up. Even in fog, standing at the edge of Europe has its own atmosphere.

Insider Tips

  • 🧥
Layer up no matter the season. It can be 15°C in Honningsvåg but 2°C with gale-force winds and sleet at the plateau. Windproof jacket, warm hat, and gloves are mandatory — even in July.
  • 🌫
Check the fog before heading up. The Nordkapp plateau is frequently socked in. The tourist information office near the pier has a live webcam. Fog can be magical, but it can also completely obscure the Globe Monument.
  • 💳
Norway is virtually cashless. Visa and Mastercard work everywhere — buses, toilets, cafes, souvenir shops. You don't need NOK cash.
  • Book transport ahead. Rental cars book out months in advance. The public Route 406 bus runs limited schedules and fills fast. Cruise excursion buses depart right from the pier and will wait if the ship is delayed.
  • 🦀
Eat the King Crab. The cold Barents Sea waters produce some of the world's finest King Crab. Corner Spiseri on the harbor and the King Crab House in Honningsvåg are the go-to spots.
