Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Fagerneskaia (Fagernes Deepwater Berth), opened 2019 — no tender required, and the town center is an easy flat walk away.

Getting Ashore in Narvik

  • 1
Walk to townThe pier is about 1.5 km from Narvik Torg (town square) — a flat 15–20 minute stroll along the main road. Most attractions are within easy reach on foot from there.
  • 2
Shuttle busMany cruise lines offer a paid shuttle from the pier to the town center. It typically drops you near the Narvik War Museum.
  • 3
TaxisTaxis wait at the pier but are expensive. Useful for Polar Park (~65 km) or the gondola base station if you prefer not to walk the uphill stretch.

💡 Pro move: Norway is virtually cashless — don't worry about having NOK on hand. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes and public toilets.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Narvik has a dedicated cruise pier opened in 2019, eliminating tendering for all but the smallest expedition vessels.

Top Excursions

Narvik's excursions run from sobering WWII history to breathtaking Arctic wilderness — all within a compact, walkable base.

History

Narvik War Museum

One of Norway's best modern museums, dedicated to the 1940 Battle of Narvik — a fierce two-month Arctic campaign (9 April – 8 June 1940) that handed Germany its first defeat of WWII. Interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia installations make it engaging for all ages. Located right in the town center at Kongens gate 39, as part of the Narvik War and Peace Centre.

Adventure

Narvikfjellet Gondola

A modern cable car lifts you 656 m above sea level for sweeping panoramas of the Ofotfjord, surrounding peaks, and the town below. In summer, experience the Midnight Sun from the summit restaurant; in winter, Northern Lights. The gondola base is a 20-minute mostly uphill walk from the town square.

Iconic

Ofoten Railway (Ofotbanen)

Opened in 1902 to haul Swedish iron ore to the sea, the Ofoten Line clings dramatically to mountain cliffs above the fjord. Take the train from Narvik station up to the Norway–Sweden border (Bjørnfjell, with services continuing to Riksgränsen and Abisko in Sweden) and back for one of Norway's most scenic rail journeys. Book early — this fills up fast.

See wolves, brown bears, lynx, wolverines, Arctic foxes, and reindeer in large natural enclosures. Requires a cruise excursion or rental car — no practical public transport from the pier.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Go cashless. Norway is one of the world's most cashless societies. You do not need NOK — Visa and Mastercard work everywhere, including buses, museums, and street food.
  • 🚂
Book the Ofoten Railway early. This is Narvik's most popular excursion. Seats sell out quickly — book through your cruise line or SJ Norge before you board.
  • 🧥
Dress in layers. Even in July, Narvik is Arctic. A windproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes are essential. Rain is always possible.
  • 🏪
Sunday closures. Norwegian law restricts Sunday trading. If your ship calls on a Sunday, supermarkets and most shops will be closed — but the War Museum, gondola, and cafes remain open.
  • 🚢
Watch the ore trains. Long iron ore trains rumble through Narvik continuously. The port is the only one in Norway connected to the Swedish (not Norwegian) rail network — a quirk worth knowing.
