Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor in Narsaq Bay and run tender boats to the small town harbor.

Getting Ashore in Narsaq

  • 1
Tender to harborShip's tenders drop passengers at the pontoon dock in the center of the small harbor. Expedition vessels may dock directly at the Atlantic Quay pier.
  • 2
Walk into townFrom the dock it's a gentle 400 m (5–10 min) uphill walk on paved and gravel roads to the main street and museum.
  • 3
Plan your dayPre-booked boat excursions (icebergs, glacier, Norse ruins at Qassiarsuk) depart from the harbor. Ship's tours and local operators both run these.

💡 Pro move: Roads are hilly and uneven — challenging for wheelchairs or mobility aids. Midges can be intense June–August; bring insect repellent.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Cards work at the main spots — Hotel Narsaq, the museum, and the supermarket all take Visa/Mastercard. Bring a little DKK cash for street vendors and the fish market.
  • 🦟
Bring insect repellent — summer midges and mosquitoes can be ferocious in the valleys and on hikes. A head net is useful on longer walks.
  • 🧥
Layers are essential — it can be warm and sunny in town (15–20°C in July/August) but very cold on the tender or near icebergs. Wear wicking base layers and bring a windproof shell.
  • 📵
Connectivity is limited — Greenland's internet is satellite-based, slow, and expensive. Turn off cellular data roaming before going ashore to avoid large charges.
  • 🧊
Never climb on grounded icebergs — small 'growlers' wash ashore on Narsaq's black sand beaches. They look stable but can roll without warning.
