Insider Tips

  • 🐕
    Biosecurity is serious. Sniffer dogs operate at the port exit. No fresh food, fruit, vegetables, meat, or honey off the ship. Packaged food must be declared. Fines start at NZD 400 on the spot.
  • 🚌
    Shuttle is mandatory — you cannot walk through the port. The free shuttle runs continuously between the wharf and the i-SITE on Marine Parade. Allow 20–30 min buffer before all-aboard.
  • ☀️
    UV is ferocious. New Zealand's UV index is among the highest in the world even on cool or overcast days. Wear SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat — locals don't skip this step.
  • 💳
    No tipping and cards everywhere. Tipping is not customary in New Zealand. Prices include GST. Contactless payment is accepted in virtually every café, shop, and attraction — cash is rarely needed.
  • 🦅
    Book Cape Kidnappers early. The gannet safari is Napier's most-sought excursion and fills fast on cruise days. Book through the ship or direct with operators (Gannet Safaris, Gannet Beach Adventures) before you arrive.

Taxis cannot access the cruise wharf directly; take the free shuttle to the i-SITE first. Local operators include Hawke's Bay Combined Taxis and Baywide Taxis. The city center is only 1–2 km from port.

Uber is available in Napier and can be requested once you reach the city center via the port shuttle. Useful for trips to wineries or outlying attractions in Hawke's Bay.

Once in the city center, Napier's compact Art Deco downtown is very walkable. Marine Parade, the main shopping street, and key landmarks are all within easy strolling distance of the i-SITE drop-off.
