Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in the sheltered bay and run tender boats to the main pier on the western side of Stone Town — the island's historic north half.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender from shipShips anchor offshore. Tender boats run to the Stone Town pier on the west side of the island, a 10–15 minute ride. Check ship's schedule for last tender back.
  • 2
Arrive at the pierYou step off right in the heart of Stone Town, within walking distance of all major sights. Tuk-tuks and bicycle taxis wait at the pier for easy transport to the southern end.
  • 3
Hire a guide (recommended)Licensed local guides meet you at the pier. At $10–20 USD for the day, they add enormous value — explaining the history, navigating vendors, and keeping you oriented.

💡 Pro move: The island is tiny — you can walk almost everything. Carry cash (small USD or EUR bills, or MZN) as cards are rarely accepted.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise calls tender ashore; the island's shallow reefs and small pier cannot accommodate large ships.

Just outside the fort, reached through a gate, stands the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, built in 1522 — widely considered the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere. Cannons, panoramic sea views, and centuries of atmosphere.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring small USD or EUR bills. The Mozambican Metical (MZN) is the local currency. Some vendors accept USD but at poor rates — use an ATM in Stone Town for better value, or exchange before you go.
  • Tender timing matters. This is a tender port with no pier for large ships. Watch your ship's schedule carefully — missing the last tender has serious consequences.
  • 👘
Dress modestly. The island has large Muslim and traditional Catholic communities. Women should cover shoulders and knees; a light sarong or kanga is ideal in the heat.
  • 🧴
Sun protection is essential. The island is hot, humid, and exposed. High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and extra water are non-negotiables.
  • 🎭
Look for the Mussiro face mask. Many local women wear a white paste called Mussiro made from the olir tree — a traditional Makua sunscreen and beauty treatment. Don't stare, but do appreciate this living cultural practice.
