Getting Ashore

Cruise ships berth at the modern Mombasa Cruise Terminal inside Kilindini Harbour — a purpose-built facility opened in 2022 with lounge, shops, and customs on-site.

Getting from Ship to Town

  • 1
Clear the terminalCustoms and immigration counters are inside the sail-shaped terminal building. Kenya now offers a multi-entry Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — most nationalities complete this online before arrival.
  • 2
Taxis & tuk-tuks at the gateLicensed taxis and tuk-tuks (bajaj) wait just outside. Negotiate the fare before you get in — KSh 500–800 to Old Town or Fort Jesus. Ride-share apps (Bolt, Uber) also work in Mombasa.
  • 3
Ship shuttlesMany cruise lines run optional paid shuttles to the city center. Check your ship's daily program if you prefer a hassle-free transfer.
  • 4
Return timingTraffic on the roads north — over the Nyali Bridge and Makupa Causeway toward Nyali and Bamburi — can be heavy in the afternoon. Allow at least 45 minutes back to the terminal from the city center, more if you venture to beach resorts or safari parks.

💡 Pro move: The terminal itself is not walkable to attractions — plan transport from the start.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise ships berth at the dedicated Mombasa Cruise Terminal within Kilindini Harbour on the west side of Mombasa Island.

Insider Tips

  • 💱
USD is widely accepted in tourist areas, but Kenyan Shillings get better prices at markets. ATMs are available near Old Town and major hotels.
  • 🛺
Agree on taxi fares before you board. Tuk-tuks (bajaj) are cheaper for short hops; Bolt and Uber apps give you metered pricing and are available in Mombasa.
  • 🌡️
It's hot and humid year-round — light, breathable clothing is essential. Carry water and sunscreen, especially if you're walking Old Town midday.
  • 🕌
Dress modestly around mosques and Old Town — covered shoulders and knees are respectful and expected. Scarves available from market vendors.
  • Safari excursions need an early start. Tsavo East is roughly a 2.5–3 hour drive each way — only viable if your ship arrives before 8 AM. Haller Park is a far easier half-day option.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, BoltBoth Uber and Bolt operate in Mombasa. Book via app for a fixed fare — avoids negotiation with street taxis.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚕 Taxi

KSh 850–1,100 (~$7–9 USD)

Unmetered taxis are plentiful at the port gate. Always negotiate the fare before you get in; the city center (Fort Jesus, Old Town) is only 3–4 km away.

📱 Uber / Bolt

KSh 600–900 (~$5–7 USD)

Uber and Bolt both operate in Mombasa and give you transparent pricing. Recommended over street taxis for solo travelers or if you prefer a fixed fare.

🛺 Tuk-tuk

KSh 200–400 (~$1.50–3 USD)

Three-wheeled auto-rickshaws are cheap for short hops around Old Town and Fort Jesus. Negotiate the price upfront.

🚌 Matatu (local minibus)

KSh 30–60 (~$0.25–0.50 USD)

Mombasa's shared minibuses are the cheapest way to get around but can be crowded and routes are confusing for first-timers. Best for adventurous travelers with local guidance.

🗺️ Guided shore excursion

$60–175 USD per person

Half- and full-day city tours (Fort Jesus, Old Town, Haller Park) depart directly from the pier. Convenient for cruise passengers wanting a structured, hassle-free experience.
