Lunga Island, Treshnish Isles, Scotland

The largest of the uninhabited Treshnish Isles delivers one of the UK's great wildlife encounters — Atlantic puffins so tame they perch at your feet, with guillemots, razorbills, and grey seals completing the spectacle.

⚓ Tender (Zodiac/small boat landing)🕒 Typical call: 2–4 hrs on island💷 GBP — no shops on island🗣️ English🐦 Puffin season: mid-April to early August
Docking
Tender only — Zodiac or small boat to rocky shore; no pier
Best Time
May–July for puffins; landings weather-dependent year-round
Best For
Wildlife photography, puffin watching, raw Hebridean wilderness
Don't Miss
Harp Rock seabird cliffs — thousands of guillemots and razorbills

Getting Ashore

Lunga has no pier — all landings are by tender or Zodiac onto a rocky beach, subject to sea conditions.

Getting Ashore at Lunga Island

  • 1
Zodiac to shoreShips anchor off Lunga and expedition tenders or Zodiacs ferry passengers to the landing at Corran Lunga, a boulder bay on the north-east end of the island. Expect spray and a step onto wet rocks (sometimes a floating pontoon) — waterproof boots are essential.
  • 2
Landing mobilityThe landing requires reasonable agility — stepping from a moving boat onto uneven rocks. Anyone with limited mobility should check with the ship before committing. No wheelchair access.
  • 3
No facilities ashoreThere are zero facilities on Lunga — no toilets, no shelter, no paths. Use the ship's facilities before landing and take all rubbish back with you.

💡 Pro move: Landings can be cancelled at the skipper's discretion due to swell or wind. Weather in the Hebrides changes fast — dress in waterproofs regardless of conditions at embarkation.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

No permanent landing infrastructure — all access is by small boat to open shore.

Top Excursions

There are no commercial tours on the island — the entire visit is a self-guided wildlife walk across protected bird habitat.

Wildlife

Puffin Colony at Cruachan Hill

A short climb up Lunga's grassy slopes brings you to the puffin colony on Cruachan, the island's modest summit. Puffins here are famously unbothered by humans — they will land within arm's reach. Stay on worn paths to avoid collapsing their burrows.

⏱ 1–2 hrs🚶 Easy-moderate🐦 Puffins May–Jul📷 No telephoto needed

Harp Rock Seabird Cliffs

Follow the clifftop path north to Harp Rock, a sea stack near the north end of the island where vast colonies of guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars, and shags carpet the ledges. The noise and scale are extraordinary — one of Scotland's great seabird spectacles.

⏱ 1–1.5 hrs🚶 Moderate (cliff paths)🔭 Binoculars useful⚠️ Stay back from cliff edge

Grey Seal Watching

Lunga's surrounding rocks and inshore waters are frequented by Atlantic grey seals. Watch from the landing area or clifftops as seals haul out and play in the kelp. Dolphins and minke whales are occasionally spotted on the tender ride.

Adventure

Staffa & Fingal's Cave Combo

Many expedition cruises combine Lunga with a stop at Staffa, the basalt island roughly 5km (3 miles) south, famous for Fingal's Cave — the hexagonal columns that inspired Mendelssohn's overture. Check your itinerary; some ships visit both in one day.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

The entire island is the walk — there are no marked paths, but the terrain is open and compact enough to explore freely.

Landing Point to Cruachan Summit

1.5 km round trip | Easy-moderate | 30–60 min

From the boulder landing at Corran Lunga, follow any worn track uphill through tussock grass to Cruachan Lunga (the island's modest highest point at 103m). Puffins nest all around the upper slopes. The summit offers panoramic views over the Treshnish Isles toward Mull and Ben More.

Cliff Walk to Harp Rock

2 km round trip | Moderate | 45–75 min

Head north along the clifftop from the landing area to Harp Rock near the island's north end. The path is rough and trackless in places — watch your footing near the edge. The seabird colonies here are among the densest in the Hebrides.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Waterproof boots are non-negotiable. The landing involves stepping from a Zodiac onto wet, seaweed-covered rocks. Wellies or walking boots with gaiters are ideal. Trainers will be soaked immediately.
  • 🐦
Don't step on the hummocks. The grassy mounds all over the upper island are puffin burrows. Step only on bare dirt tracks — one wrong step can collapse a nest tunnel and kill chicks below.
  • 🚽
No toilets on the island. None at all. Use the ship's facilities immediately before boarding your tender. There is nowhere to go once ashore.
  • 🌦️
Dress for Hebridean weather, not the forecast. Wind, rain, and sea spray can arrive with no warning. Full waterproof jacket and trousers, plus warm layers, even in July.
  • 📵
No phone signal, no shops, no food. Lunga is genuinely off-grid. Bring water and a snack. Carry out all rubbish — there are no bins.
