Insider Tips

  • 🥾
Wear proper shoes for the castle. The path to Château Gaillard is steep, cobbled, and often muddy — trainers or sandals will struggle. The outer grounds are free; the inner keep costs ≈€4.
  • 📅
Château Gaillard is closed Mon & Tue. If your ship calls on these days, skip the inner keep but the exterior walk and panoramic views are still accessible year-round.
  • 🍎
Try Norman cider, not wine. You're in apple country — order a bowl of cidre bouché at any café. Calvados (apple brandy) and Pommeau are also excellent local picks.
  • 🏪
Shops close for lunch. Most Grand-Andely shops shut 12:00–14:00 and many close Mondays entirely. Plan market and souvenir browsing for the morning.
  • 🚍
Ask about the petit train. In high season a tourist land-train sometimes runs from the dock up toward the castle — saves the steepest part of the climb. Check at the gangway or ship's desk on arrival.
