Getting Ashore

Ships tie up at Långnäs pier — a modern ferry terminal with no town attached. You must arrange transport to reach any sights.

Getting Ashore & Getting Around

  • 1
Step off the pierThe gangway leads directly into the passenger terminal building. Walk is under 300 m on flat paved ground. A new terminal opened May 2026 with improved facilities.
  • 2
Take the ship shuttle or busMost cruise lines run a shuttle to Mariehamn (~30 km, 35 min). If not, bus Line 5 (Ålandstrafiken) runs to Mariehamn but on a ferry commuter schedule — check times before relying on it.
  • 3
Book a taxi in advanceThere is no taxi rank at the port. Pre-order from Mariehamn via Ålands Taxi (+358 18 32000). Ride-share apps do not operate here.
  • 4
Rent a bike or carIf your ship offers bicycle hire, this is an excellent port for it — Lumparland's roads are quiet and flat. Car rentals are available in Mariehamn but must be pre-booked.

💡 Pro move: Långnäs exists primarily because Åland's EU tax exemption lets Baltic ferries sell duty-free goods only if they physically stop here. Your ship may dock just 10–20 minutes for overnights; day calls are typically 4–8 hours.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Långnäs has a single deep-water commercial quay capable of handling large Baltic ferries and cruise ships — all arrivals dock; no tender service is used.

Top Excursions

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Book the shuttle early. Långnäs has no town, shops, or taxis waiting at the dock. If your ship offers a Mariehamn shuttle, sign up before it sells out — it's your easiest option by far.
  • Watch for time zone changes. Åland (Finland) is UTC+3 in summer — 1 hour ahead of Sweden. If you sailed from Stockholm, your ship clock may differ from local time. Confirm with the ship.
  • 💳
Card only is fine. Åland is almost cashless. Contactless payment is accepted at every café, museum, and even bike rental. You don't need euros in your pocket.
  • 🥞
Eat Ålandspannkaka. This thick semolina-cardamom pancake with stewed prunes and whipped cream is the island's signature dish. You'll find it in any café in Mariehamn — it's genuinely delicious.
  • 🚲
Bike if you can. Lumparland's roads are flat, quiet, and pine-shaded — ideal cycling country. If your ship rents bikes, this is one of the best ports on a Baltic itinerary to actually use them.
