Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Port de la Pallice, the deep-water commercial port 6 km northwest of the Old Port — walking is not practical.

Getting from the Ship to the City

  • 1
Shuttle busCruise lines typically run shuttle buses (complimentary or small fee) from the Môle d'Escale cruise terminal at Port de la Pallice to the city centre near the tourist office. Journey: 10–15 min.
  • 2
TaxiTaxis queue at the pier and will take you to the Vieux Port in around 10–15 minutes. Agree the fare or ensure the meter runs before setting off.
  • 3
Return timingKnow your all-aboard time. The shuttle frequency can thin out in late afternoon — allow at least 30 minutes buffer for the return trip.

💡 Pro move: The terminal has a welcome centre with luggage scanning. Yélo public bikes and the Passeur electric water taxi are useful once you're in town.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Shuttle or taxi required. Port de la Pallice is 6 km from the city — factor in 10–15 min each way and confirm shuttle times on board.
  • 🌊
Atlantic tides are dramatic. The Vieux Port can look majestic at high tide and muddy at low tide — both are perfectly normal.
  • 🚲
Bikes are the city's soul. La Rochelle was first in France with free bike-sharing (1976). Rent a Yélo bike to explore or to cycle across to Île de Ré.
  • 🏝
Île de Ré is the best day trip. Coach Line 150 crosses the bridge cheaply (seasonal lines 151/152 too). Arrive early to beat the crowds and rent a bike in Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
  • 🌧
Pack a light jacket. Atlantic weather can turn cool even in summer. The arcaded streets offer shelter, and the Aquarium is a solid rainy-day option.
