Getting Ashore

Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the small cargo jetty in London, the island's administrative center.

Getting Ashore at Kiritimati

  • 1
Tender to London jettyThere is no cruise pier. Your ship anchors in deep water outside the reef and tenders passengers to the working jetty in London village. Passage through the reef can be choppy — tenders may be cancelled in rough swells.
  • 2
Arrive in London villageThe tender landing puts you directly in London, the main settlement. Local shops, the post office, and the beach are all within a few minutes' walk.
  • 3
Arrange transport for anywhere elseThe island is huge. To visit areas beyond London — Cook Island, the salt flats, Poland beach — you'll need a pre-booked tour or a lift from a local with a pickup truck. Bikes are occasionally available near the jetty.

💡 Pro move: Bring AUD cash from the ship. There are no ATMs on the island and credit cards are not accepted anywhere.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash in AUD only. There are no ATMs accepting international cards and no credit card terminals anywhere on the island. Bring Australian dollars in small denominations from your ship or last port.
  • Tendering can be cancelled. Kiritimati's anchorage is exposed. If swells are high, tenders may not run — have a Plan B and keep your excursion expectations flexible.
  • ☀️
Brutal equatorial sun. The island sits just 144 miles north of the Equator. Wear reef-safe SPF 50+, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarized sunglasses — the lagoon reflection intensifies the heat considerably.
  • 👗
Dress modestly in the villages. Kiribati is a conservative, deeply Christian society. Cover shoulders and knees when walking through London. Swimwear is fine at the beach.
  • 💧
Do not drink the tap water. Bring bottled water from the ship. Fresh coconut water sold by locals is safe, cheap, and refreshing.

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisNo Uber, Lyft, Grab, or Bolt operate on Kiritimati. No formal app-based rideshare exists on the island.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

~AUD 50–80/day

A handful of local operators rent cars, giving you freedom to explore the atoll's remote flats, bird colonies, and outer villages at your own pace.

🚲 Bicycle rental

Bicycles can be rented and are well-suited to the flat terrain. A popular way to reach the bird sanctuary at Motu Tabu or explore the lagoon road.

🚢 Cruise line shore excursion

The most reliable option for seeing the island. Tender is required to reach shore, and organized tours handle logistics on this remote, infrastructure-light atoll.

🚶 On foot
