Insider Tips

  • 💳
Cards only — no cash needed. Sweden is almost entirely cashless. Visa/Mastercard work everywhere: buses, cafés, museums, even public toilets. Foreign transaction fees are your only worry.
  • 🚌
Verkö shuttle is key. If you dock at Verkö, the walk to town takes 2 hours along a highway — take the cruise shuttle or local Bus #2 instead. Tap your contactless card on the bus.
  • 🎟
The Naval Museum is unmissable. Adult admission runs about 170 SEK in summer (free for under-18s, and free for all on Wednesdays in the low season). Skip pricey ship tours and walk there yourself — the submarine hall alone is worth the whole port call.
  • 🥟
Try kroppkakor before you leave. Blekinge's signature dish — dense potato dumplings stuffed with pork and onion, served with butter and lingonberries. Look for it at Smultronstället near the town centre.
  • The free ferry to Aspö runs hourly. Departing from Handelshamnen, it takes 25 minutes and lands you at a beautiful 17th-century fortress island. One of the best free excursions in any Baltic port.
