Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Tanjung Priok's Nusantara Pura Passenger Terminal — part of Indonesia's busiest industrial port. Heavy truck traffic makes it impractical to walk out; all visitors need transport.

Getting Out of Tanjung Priok

  • 1
Ship shuttle or excursion busMany lines run a paid or complimentary shuttle to a nearby mall. Booked ship excursions load from directly beside the ship.
  • 2
Blue Bird taxiBlue Bird (blue cars) are the trusted metered taxi. They're typically permitted to enter the terminal. Always confirm the meter (argo) is running.
  • 3
Grab app (rideshare)Download Grab before arriving — it's Southeast Asia's Uber, gives fixed fares, and is widely available in Jakarta. Meet your driver at the port gate.

💡 Pro move: Jakarta's traffic is legendary. Allow double the expected travel time for any return journey. Head back to the port well before all-aboard.

Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Budget double travel time. Jakarta's traffic is legendary. A 30-min trip at 7 AM can be 2 hours at 2 PM. Head back to Tanjung Priok well before all-aboard — aim for 2.5 hours early.
  • 🚕
Blue Bird taxis only. Use Blue Bird (blue cars) or Grab app. Avoid unofficial taxis outside the port. Always verify the meter is running.
  • 💵
Carry rupiah cash. IDR is essential for markets, street food, and small vendors. ATMs are plentiful in malls. Credit cards accepted at larger restaurants and shops.
  • 👗
Dress modestly. Cover shoulders and knees, especially visiting the Istiqlal Mosque. Robes are provided at the mosque entrance if needed.
  • ☀️
Prepare for heat and rain. Jakarta is 30–33°C (86–91°F) year-round with sudden tropical downpours. Bring water, sunscreen, and a compact umbrella.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Grab, GojekUber exited Southeast Asia in 2018. Grab and Gojek are the dominant ride-hailing apps and widely available in Jakarta. Bluebird is the recommended traditional taxi company.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Transjakarta Bus Wisata (City Tour) operates free double-decker tourist buses on several themed routes (Tue–Sun, 10:00–17:00). Tap an e-money card but no balance is deducted. A paid Open Top Tour of Jakarta launched in late 2024 at ~IDR 50,000 (~$3.20 USD) with audio guide and snacks.

🚕 Taxi (Bluebird)

Metered taxi from Tanjung Priok cruise terminal to Kota Tua (Old Town) is about 12 km. Bluebird is the most trusted company; avoid unmarked cabs.

📱 Grab / Gojek

IDR 40,000–70,000 (~.50–4.50 USD)

App-based ride-hailing is the easiest and most transparent option. Grab and Gojek both serve the port area; book via app before leaving the terminal.

🚌 Transjakarta Bus Wisata (Free)

Free

Free double-decker tourist buses run Tue–Sun, 10:00–17:00 on themed routes including Kota Tua and Monas. Tap an e-money card at the stop (no deduction). Great value for sightseeing.
