Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Take the port shuttle: Walking through the container terminal is not permitted. Board the free shuttle at the gangway and alight at the gate near Corbeta Esmeralda.
  • 🏛️
Pre-book the Esmeralda: Timed entry slots sell out — reserve online before your ship arrives. It's right at the port gate and a fantastic first stop.
  • 🌵
Humberstone needs time: Allow at least 6 hours in port to comfortably do the UNESCO ghost towns. Hire a taxi at the gate and agree the return time upfront.
  • ☀️
Desert sun is brutal: Iquique sits in the Atacama — UV levels are extreme year-round. Bring strong sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat even on cloudy days.
  • 🍋
Eat ceviche and chumbeque: Fresh ceviche de corvina at the Cavancha Península restaurants is exceptional. And grab chumbeque — the local layered lemon-syrup pastry — from any bakery on Baquedano.
