Insider Tips

  • ✈️
Fly in the day before. Hobby Airport is 40 miles away, Bush Intercontinental 70 miles. Houston traffic is brutal — never risk a same-day flight on embarkation day.
  • 🌫️
Fog season (Dec–Apr): Dense sea fog can delay ships in the Ship Channel by several hours. Book return flights with at least a 5-hour buffer.
  • 🧾
Texas TABC duty tax: Returning to the US via Galveston? Texas collects a state tax (~$3–4/bottle) on duty-free alcohol at customs. Have cash ready.
  • 🚌
$1 trolley: The Galveston Island Trolley links downtown to the Seawall beaches for just $1/ride. Cash only, exact change required — grab singles before boarding.
  • 🅿️
Pre-book parking: If driving to the port, reserve a spot online in advance at the Port of Galveston lots or private options like EZ Cruise Parking — lots fill fast on turnaround days.
