Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships dock at the Orthios Deepwater Berth about 1.5 miles from town — walking off the pier is not permitted, so a shuttle bus is provided.

Getting Ashore in Holyhead

Shuttle to townCruise lines run complimentary shuttle buses continuously from the pier to the Celtic Gateway Bridge / Holyhead Railway Station. Very large ships may anchor offshore and tender to the inner harbour marina.
  • 2
Town centreOnce at the Celtic Gateway Bridge, the town centre is a flat 5-minute walk. Taxis queue near the shuttle drop-off; book private taxi tours well in advance.

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Shuttle is mandatory from the pier. The Orthios Berth is 1.5 miles from town — you cannot walk off the dock. Allow 20 minutes each way for the shuttle plus boarding queues, especially when re-boarding near departure time.
  • 🏰
Book castle tickets online. Caernarfon and Beaumaris both sell timed entry online — walk-up queues can be long. Snowdon Mountain Railway must be pre-booked months in advance.
  • 🌧
Bring a waterproof layer, always. North Wales is famously green for a reason. Even on sunny mornings the weather can shift rapidly on the cliffs or in the mountains.
  • 💳
Cards everywhere. GBP only — no euros accepted. Contactless and Apple Pay work in virtually all shops, cafés, and taxis. ATMs near the town centre.
  • 🗣️
Try a Welsh word. Say "Diolch" (dee-olch — thank you) and locals will love you. Welsh is the everyday language here, not just a tourist novelty.
