One of the most remote ports in French Polynesia, the Gambier Islands reward expedition cruisers with a stunning lagoon, 19th-century stone ruins, and the world's finest black pearls.
All ships anchor in the lagoon and tender passengers to the wharf in Rikitea.
💡 Pro move: There is no port infrastructure or shuttle bus. Island transport is on foot or by organized tour. Check tender return times carefully — the Gambier Islands are extremely remote and no commercial flights connect easily.
All cruise ships tender to Rikitea — there is no deepwater pier for passenger vessels.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |

The best experiences here go beyond Rikitea — take a boat into the lagoon to reach outer islets and pearl farms.
The 1848 coral-stone cathedral dominates Rikitea and can be explored in 30–45 minutes. Its altar is inlaid with black and mother-of-pearl. Surrounding the village are ruins of Father Laval's 19th-century religious building campaign — a convent, triumphal arch, and watchtowers.
Walk from the tender wharf →A strenuous 441m ascent through pine forest and grassland rewards hikers with a 360° panorama of the entire Gambier lagoon and surrounding islands. Allow 2.5–3 hours round-trip from the wharf.
Find Gambier Islands hiking tours →Visit a working perliculture farm and see how Gambier's prized black pearls are grafted and harvested. The lagoon's cool water produces pearls with rare blue, green, and deep-purple overtones found nowhere else in French Polynesia.
Find Gambier pearl farm tours →Boat tours visit uninhabited outer islands in the lagoon. Aukena has a perfectly preserved 19th-century stone church and watchtower. Taravai is larger with wild beaches and a ruined stone village. Both are postcard-perfect Polynesia.
Find Gambier Islands boat tours →The volcanic main island has limited beaches, but the outer coral islets offer white-sand, turquoise-water beaches accessible by boat. Snorkeling in the lagoon is excellent — look for giant clams, sharks, and colourful reef fish.
Find Gambier Islands snorkeling tours →Rikitea is tiny and flat — most sights are easily reached on foot from the tender wharf.
From the wharf, walk through the village to St. Michael's Cathedral, then loop past the ruined convent behind the church, through the village square, and back to the waterfront. Take in the ruins of Father Laval's 19th-century structures scattered among modern homes.
Follow the main road south from the wharf to reach the start of the Mount Duff trail. The ascent itself is steep and muddy in wet weather — wear closed shoes and allow 2.5 hours total from the tender pier.
