Top Excursions

Excursions here are raw and rewarding — shipwrecks, jungle-covered battlefield islands, and pristine reef snorkelling that few tourists ever reach.

Iconic

MS World Discoverer Wreck, Roderick Bay

The German expedition ship struck an uncharted reef in 2000 and was beached here, listing at 45°. Swim beside the rusting hull while village kids play on it — one of the Pacific's most surreal sights.

History

Gavutu & Tanambogo WWII Islands

These twin islets were a fortified Japanese seaplane base stormed by US Marines on 7–9 August 1942. Battle-scarred concrete structures, bunkers and war debris remain ashore, while sunken Mavis flying boats, landing barges and aircraft parts lie in the surrounding shallows.

Tulagi is tiny — the whole island is walkable in under an hour, and most cruise visitors combine a quick town stroll with a boat excursion.

Tulagi Town Loop

1–1.5 hrs | Easy flat walk | ~2 km

From the public jetty, walk the main road past local shops, the small market (buy a fresh coconut here), and colonial-era concrete ruins toward Raiders Hotel. Return along the waterfront.

British Residency Ridge Hike

45 min return | Moderate uphill | Panoramic views

A steep but short track behind Tulagi town leads to the ruins of the old British Residency — concrete steps and foundations survive, and the 360° view over the harbour, Guadalcanal, and Ironbottom Sound is worth every step.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Carry cash in SBD. There are no ATMs on Tulagi. Raiders Hotel takes cards, but local guides, market vendors, and boat operators are cash only. Exchange on ship or in Honiara first.
  • 🦟
Malaria and dengue are present in the Solomon Islands. Pack high-strength DEET repellent and cover up at dusk. Check malaria prophylaxis requirements before your cruise.
  • 🧴
Use reef-safe sunscreen — coral reefs here are pristine and chemical sunscreens cause real damage. Rash guards are a practical alternative.
  • 👗
Dress modestly ashore. Solomon Islanders are conservative. Women should cover knees and shoulders (a sarong over swimwear is fine); walking through villages in swimwear is disrespectful.
  • The World Discoverer is the headline act — but it requires a boat to Roderick Bay on a separate island. Book through your ship or hire a local banana boat at the Tulagi jetty.
