Getting Ashore

No cruise pier exists in the Exumas — all ships anchor in Elizabeth Harbour and tender passengers to the Government Dock in George Town.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to Government DockShips anchor in Elizabeth Harbour. Tender boats (ship's tenders or local catamarans) run continuously. The dock drops you directly into George Town's small waterfront.
  • 2
George Town is walkable from the dockSt. Andrew's Anglican Church, Lake Victoria, the straw market, taxis, and water taxis to Stocking Island are all within 5 minutes on foot.
  • 3
Water taxi to Stocking IslandFrom the dock, catch a local water taxi (~$20 round-trip) for the 10-minute crossing to Stocking Island — the best value move of the day.
  • 4
Taxis for further beachesTaxis wait at the dock but are not metered — agree on a fare first. Cars drive on the left. Tropic of Cancer Beach (Little Exuma) is 30 minutes south; Coco Plum Beach is about 40 minutes north.

💡 Pro move: Small/luxury lines (Windstar, Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, SeaDream) call here regularly. Large mega-ships do not — if your big-ship itinerary lists 'Exumas' it likely means a Nassau-based day excursion by powerboat.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash is king. Water taxis, straw vendors, and most beach shacks don't take cards. Bring USD — it's accepted 1:1 with the Bahamian dollar.
  • 🚕
Negotiate before you ride. Taxis have no meters. Agree on the fare before you get in. A shared taxi to Tropic of Cancer Beach runs roughly $15–20 per person each way.
  • 🐷
Swimming pigs are far away. Big Major Cay is ~55 miles north — budget a full day and book in advance. Operators in George Town also run shorter tours to cays closer to town where pigs have been introduced.
  • 🕍
Sunday means quiet. Most shops and groceries in George Town are closed on Sundays. Beach bars and tour operators stay open — plan your shopping accordingly.
  • 🦟
Pack insect repellent. No-see-ums (sand flies) can be brutal on calm, windless afternoons at the beach. DEET or picaridin works best.

Water taxis run from the Government Dock in George Town to Stocking Island, a short hop across the harbour with a beautiful beach and snorkeling.

🚗 Rental Car

$70–$100/day

Great Exuma is spread out — a rental car is the best way to reach more distant beaches, Fish Fry at Barreterre, and other attractions along the main road.

⛵ Boat Tour

$100–$200+/person

The islands are best explored by sea. Group day tours visit swimming pigs, iguanas, sandbars, and snorkeling spots throughout the Exuma Cays. Book through local operators or your ship.
