Getting Ashore

Ships dock at active industrial fishing piers on Amaknak Island — pedestrian access through the port zone is not permitted, so shuttles are essential.

Getting from Ship to Town

  • 1
Pier to shuttle pointShips dock at UniSea or Kloosterboer dock. Cruise lines run shuttles (sometimes fee-based) to the Grand Aleutian Hotel or Museum of the Aleutians — confirm with your ship before arrival.
  • 2
Town is walkable once thereOnce dropped in town, the core of Unalaska is walkable. The bridge connecting Amaknak Island to Unalaska Island is about a 25-minute walk across from the Grand Aleutian Hotel to the museum.
  • 3
Taxis & transportNo Uber or Lyft exists here. Taxis are scarce and expensive. Book excursions through your ship for remote sites like Summer Bay or Fort Schwatka.

💡 Pro move: Land outside designated public areas (including many hiking trails) is managed by the Ounalashka Corporation — a land-use permit is required for off-trail access. Bunker Hill via the main road does not require one.

Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Dress for anything. Dutch Harbor is called the "Birthplace of the Winds." Fog, rain, cold, and gusts can arrive in minutes — pack a windproof and waterproof outer layer even if it looks clear.
  • 🦅
Eagles will steal your lunch. Bald eagles here are bold and numerous. Don't walk around with food in hand — they will swoop. Keep snacks in a bag and admire from a safe distance.
  • 📵
Cell service is poor. Major US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) may have no data or roam to expensive rates. Local carrier GCI dominates. Download offline maps before arriving.
  • 🚖
No rideshares; taxis are scarce. There is no Uber or Lyft. Taxis exist but are few and expensive. Book excursions through your ship for any site outside walking distance.
  • 🏛️
Don't skip the museum. The Museum of the Aleutians (~$10) is genuinely world-class for its size. Unangan culture and WWII history here are extraordinary and rarely covered elsewhere.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisUber, Lyft, Grab, and Bolt do not operate in Dutch Harbor. Uber and Lyft confirm no coverage in this remote community.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

The Unalaska Visitor Bureau has operated a hop-on hop-off shuttle (11-passenger vans) for cruise passengers at ~$50/person, stopping at the Museum of the Aleutians and the Russian Orthodox Church. Not always widely advertised; check with the visitor bureau on port day.

🚕 Taxi

$5–$10

Several local taxi companies operate in Unalaska (Alaskan Taxi, Aleutian Taxi, Island Taxi, Star Taxi, and others). Short rides to city-center attractions run $5–$10; arrange in advance on busy cruise days.

🚢 Cruise Line Shore Excursion

Varies

Most cruise lines offer guided excursions covering the Aleutian WWII National Historic Area, MOTA, and the Russian Orthodox Church. These include transport and are the easiest option for first-timers.

🚶 Walking

Free

The commercial dock is roughly 1 mile from the town center. The walk is flat but exposed to Aleutian weather — bring a windproof layer regardless of season.

🚗 Rental Car

Varies

A small number of rental cars are available on the island; supply is very limited. Best reserved well in advance if you want to explore independently beyond walking distance.
