WWII Aleutian History Tour
Van tour of Dutch Harbor's extraordinary WWII sites: Fort Schwatka (the highest coastal defense battery built in the US during the war), gun emplacements, bunkers, and the Aleutian WWII National Historic Area visitor center. The 1942 Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor is a rarely told chapter of the war.
A moderate 1.5-mile gravel road hike to the top of Bunker Hill rewards you with WWII concrete bunkers and sweeping 360° views of the harbor, fishing fleet, and Aleutian peaks. A free and deeply memorable walk.
One of Alaska's best small museums, covering 9,000 years of Unangan (Aleut) culture, the Russian fur-trade era, and the WWII internment of Unangan people. Plan at least 90 minutes here.
Dutch Harbor may have the highest density of bald eagles of any US port — they perch on telephone poles, shipping containers, and dumpsters like pigeons. Sea otters, sea lions, and puffins are also common in the harbor.
Walk the Spit dock area to spot famous crab boats from the Discovery Channel show — vessels like the Northwestern and Wizard are often in port between seasons. The Norwegian Rat Saloon is where the captains actually drink.
Summer Bay offers dramatic black volcanic-sand beaches backed by emerald tundra hills — no swimming, but extraordinary scenery. Glass Beach nearby yields colorful sea glass from old military and cannery operations. Requires taxi or tour.
Once shuttled into town, a bridge walk between Amaknak and Unalaska islands ties together the port's two communities.

Dress for anything. Dutch Harbor is called the "Birthplace of the Winds." Fog, rain, cold, and gusts can arrive in minutes — pack a windproof and waterproof outer layer even if it looks clear.

Eagles will steal your lunch. Bald eagles here are bold and numerous. Don't walk around with food in hand — they will swoop. Keep snacks in a bag and admire from a safe distance.

Cell service is poor. Major US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) may have no data or roam to expensive rates. Local carrier GCI dominates. Download offline maps before arriving.
