Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor in the Bay of La Concha and tender passengers directly into the fishing harbor — you step off the boat right at the edge of the Old Town.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to Puerto de San SebastiánShips anchor in the bay and run tenders to the small fishing harbor. Walk time to Parte Vieja: zero — you're already there. Expect queues in peak season; go early or late.
  • 2
Pasaia pier (some ships)Medium-sized vessels dock at the industrial port of Pasaia, about 10 km east. Take the ship shuttle (~15 min), a taxi (€15-20), or a public bus into San Sebastián.
  • 3
Bilbao / Getxo (large ships — check carefully)Some itineraries list 'San Sebastián' but dock in Bilbao, 90 minutes away by bus. If this is your call, book a ship excursion or hire a private car to guarantee return times.

💡 Pro move: Tender tickets are usually issued by the ship. Arrive at the marina by noon to make the most of pintxo lunch hours (12:30–3:00 PM).

Insider Tips

  • 🕐
Lunch timing is critical. Pintxo bars are packed and at their best noon–3 PM. Many close from 3:30–7:30 PM. Plan to eat by 1 PM if you have an early departure.
  • 🌧️
Pack a small umbrella. This is Green Spain — it's lush because it rains. Short showers are common even in summer. A packable rain jacket will save your day.
  • 💶
Carry small coins. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, but €1–2 coins are handy for pintxos and the Monte Igueldo funicular. ATMs are plentiful in the center.
  • Tender queues build fast. If your ship tenders, go ashore early or wait for the first rush to clear. Don't leave return to the last tender — late afternoon queues can be long.
  • 🗣️
Say hello in Basque. A quick Kaixo (hello) or Eskerrik asko (thank you) in Euskera will charm any local. Basque is a language isolate — nothing like Spanish.
