Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam

Central Vietnam's gateway city puts UNESCO World Heritage sites on both sides — ancient Hoi An to the south and the sacred Cham temples of My Son inland. Da Nang itself adds a striking riverside skyline and the soaring Lady Buddha on Son Tra Peninsula.

Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Tien Sa Port on the Son Tra Peninsula, about 10-15 km from Da Nang city center and 30 km from Hoi An.

Getting from Tien Sa Port to town

  • 1
Cruise line shuttle or organized tourMany lines offer a port shuttle to Da Nang city center, or book a ship excursion that handles transport to Hoi An, My Son, or Ba Na Hills.
  • 2
Grab (ride-share app)Download Grab before arrival. Walk ~500m outside the port gate — fares from there are significantly cheaper than cabs waiting dockside. City center runs ~$5-8 USD.
  • 3
Metered taxiMai Linh and Vinasun are reliable metered taxis. Insist the meter runs, or agree on a price before getting in. To Hoi An is roughly $20-25 USD one-way.

💡 Pro move: The port area itself has few tourist facilities. There's a small welcome area near the terminal, but plan to head out immediately.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Use Vietnamese Dong. USD is accepted some places but you'll get better value with VND. ATMs are plentiful downtown; withdraw before heading to Hoi An where ATM queues can be long.
  • 🚗
Book Hoi An transport in advance. Grab works well in Da Nang city, but rideshare availability to/from Hoi An is patchier — pre-book a private transfer if you're going independently.
  • 👘
Modest clothing for temples. Linh Ung Pagoda (Lady Buddha) and Hoi An's assembly halls all require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf.
  • 🌡️
Heat is serious. Central Vietnam is hot and humid — 30°C+ is normal. Start outdoor sightseeing early, carry water, and build in a shaded lunch break.
  • 🎫
Hoi An tickets. Entry to the Ancient Town's heritage buildings requires a combined ticket (purchased at booths near the Japanese Covered Bridge). The ticket covers five sites of your choice.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Grab, Be, Xanh SMGrab is the dominant ride-hailing app in Da Nang with upfront fares. Be and Xanh SM (electric VinFast fleet) are local alternatives. Uber is not available in Vietnam.

🚍 Coco City Tour

Two routes (N1 beach, N2 city) covering 50+ stops. Tickets buyable on the bus or at major stops. No dedicated cruise-port pickup confirmed.

🚕 Taxi (metered)

120,000–300,000 VND (~$5–12)

Walk to the port gate (free shuttle ~500 m) to avoid the in-port pickup surcharge some drivers add for entering the secured terminal area. Confirm fare before departure — metered Mai Linh or Vinasun taxis are most reliable.

📱 Grab / Be app

~100,000–250,000 VND (~$4–10)

Grab shows upfront fares and is widely trusted. Walk to the port gate first; drivers cannot enter the secured port area without paying a permit fee.

🚗 Private car transfer

$60–90 per vehicle

Pre-booked private sedans include an English-speaking driver and can pick up inside the port (permit fee included in price). Good for groups or those heading to Hoi An (~$70–90 one-way).

🛵 GrabBike (motorbike)

40,000–80,000 VND (~$1.50–3)

Cheapest option for solo travelers comfortable on the back of a motorbike. Book via the Grab app; helmet provided. Not suitable for luggage.
