Insider Tips

  • 🚂
Hamburg is very doable. Direct trains run hourly from Cuxhaven Bahnhof; the journey takes roughly 90 minutes each way. Allow at least 4 hours in Hamburg to make it worthwhile.
  • 🌊
Mudflat walks require a guide. The Wadden Sea tidal flats are vast and the tide comes in fast — always book a certified Wattführer (guide) rather than venturing out alone.
  • 🪑
Strandkörbe cost extra. The iconic wicker beach chairs at Duhnen and Sahlenburg are rented by the hour or half-day — budget €5-12 and bring your swimming gear.
  • 🐴
Neuwerk timing is tide-dependent. The horse-cart crossing to Neuwerk Island only runs when tides permit. Check before booking and confirm your cruise ship's departure time allows sufficient return time.
  • 📍
Kugelbake is a photo must. The wooden landmark marks the official Elbe-North Sea boundary — it's on Cuxhaven's coat of arms and one of the most photographed spots on Germany's North Sea coast.
