Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the commercial Terminal Puerto Coquimbo — a mandatory shuttle runs from the gangway to the exit gate, where taxis and colectivos await.

Getting Ashore in Coquimbo

  • 1
Shuttle to gateThe working cargo port requires a free shuttle from the ship to the terminal exit. Wait times are typically 5-10 minutes.
  • 2
On foot into townThrough the gate, you are steps from the Caleta fish market and Barrio Inglés. Most of Coquimbo's highlights are walkable within 15 minutes.
  • 3
Taxi or colectivo to La SerenaTaxis at the port gate charge around CLP 5,000–8,000 for La Serena (agree upfront — rarely metered). Colectivos (shared taxis) run constantly for about CLP 1,000 per person.
  • 4
Back before all-aboardIf visiting Elqui Valley (1.5 hrs each way), book a ship excursion or allow plenty of buffer. The port is punctual — ships leave on time.

💡 Pro move: Chile has strict agricultural customs. Do not carry fresh fruit, vegetables, or seeds off the ship — sniffer dogs are present and fines are steep.

Insider Tips

  • 💱
Use pesos. Taxis, the fish market, and cafes expect CLP. ATMs are plentiful in the city centre. Some vendors accept USD but at poor rates.
  • 🌫️
Layer up for the camanchaca. The cold Pacific fog often blankets the port until late morning. Bring a jacket — it burns off quickly, revealing hot sunshine.
  • 🚕
Agree taxi fares upfront. Cabs from the port gate are unmetered. Typical fare: CLP 5,000–8,000 to La Serena. Colectivos (shared taxis) are CLP ~1,000 and run constantly.
  • 🐾
No fruit off the ship. Chile's biosecurity is strict — sniffer dogs at the exit. Leave all fresh produce, seeds, and unsealed food on board or face a heavy on-the-spot fine.
  • 🦞
Eat upstairs at the Caleta. The second-floor market stalls serve ridiculously fresh seafood at local prices. Order the pastel de jaiba (crab casserole) — it's a regional signature.

🚕 Taxi

~2,000–5,000 CLP (~$2–5 USD) for short city rides

Taxis wait at the pier exit. Always agree on the fare before getting in — meters are not always used. Short hops within Coquimbo are inexpensive.

📱 Uber / DiDi

Upfront pricing in app

Both Uber and DiDi are confirmed available in Coquimbo. Apps show price before you confirm — a convenient option vs. negotiating taxi fares.

🚌 Public bus

~$1 USD (600–800 CLP)

Local buses stop near the pier. Very cheap and good for reaching La Serena (neighboring city ~15 km north), but schedules can be infrequent.

🗺️ Cruise shore excursion / city tour

~$70–150 USD per person

Several operators offer guided Coquimbo + La Serena city tours from the port, including transport. A good option if you want to cover both cities with local commentary.
