Getting Ashore

Brisbane has two cruise terminals — your ship's terminal determines how you get into the city.

Getting Ashore in Brisbane

  • 1
Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT)Opened in 2020 at Luggage Point/Pinkenba, adjacent to the airport. Handles all mega-ships (Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival). No public transit — take a taxi or rideshare (20-30 min, ~A$45-60 to CBD) or pre-book a cruise line shuttle.
  • 2
Portside Wharf, HamiltonSmaller ships dock here, 7 km from the CBD. Walk ~7 minutes to Bretts Wharf Ferry Terminal and catch a CityCat ferry upriver to South Bank or the city — scenic and cheap (A$3-6 with Go card).
  • 3
Getting around the cityBrisbane's TransLink network covers buses, trains, and CityCat ferries. A Go card is worth getting for multiple trips. Rideshare (Uber, Ola) is plentiful and reliable throughout the metro.

💡 Pro move: BICT has paid parking (book online in advance via Wilson Parking) but no public bus service directly to the terminal.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Brisbane operates two docked terminals — large ships use the modern BICT at Luggage Point, smaller vessels berth at Portside Wharf in Hamilton.

Insider Tips

  • 🚢
Know your terminal: BICT and Portside Wharf are 12 km apart. Confirm which one your ship uses before planning transport — they require completely different strategies.
  • 💳
Tap-and-go works everywhere in Brisbane. ATMs are plentiful in the CBD. Visa/Mastercard contactless accepted in virtually all shops, restaurants, and taxis.
  • 🦘
Book Lone Pine in advance — especially the paid koala photo experiences, which sell out. The sanctuary is not walkable from either terminal; allow budget for a taxi or organised tour.
  • CityCat ferries are a highlight in themselves: the river cruise from Portside Wharf to South Bank or South Brisbane takes about 25 minutes and costs under A$6 with a Go card.
  • ☀️
Sun protection is essential. Brisbane UV is extreme year-round. Slip, slop, slap: hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and a shirt for any outdoor activity.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, DiDi, OlaUber, DiDi, and Ola all operate in Brisbane. The cruise terminal at Luggage Point is ~20 km from the CBD; expect AUD $30–45 for a rideshare to the city center.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Hop-on hop-off bus tours are available in Brisbane city but do not serve the cruise terminal directly — you would need to get to the CBD first.

🚕 Taxi

AUD $50–65

Metered taxis are available at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal. The 19–20 km ride to the CBD typically costs AUD $50–65 depending on traffic and time of day.

📱 Rideshare (Uber / DiDi / Ola)

AUD $30–45

All three major rideshare apps operate in Brisbane. Request from the terminal — expect slightly lower fares than metered taxis for the same CBD run.

🚌 Cruise Line Shuttle

AUD $30–40/person (return)

Many cruise lines offer pre-arranged shuttle buses between the terminal and the Brisbane CBD. Book through your cruise line before departure.

🚐 Private Transfer

Varies

Private transfer companies (e.g., Yoursta) offer shared and private shuttles from the terminal to hotels and the city. Good option for groups or those with heavy luggage.
