Getting Ashore

There are no conventional cruise piers anywhere on Baffin Island — all access is via Zodiac inflatable boat from the expedition ship.

Going Ashore by Zodiac

  • 1
Board the ZodiacExpedition staff lower Zodiac platforms from the ship's stern. Step down using the rope ladder or boarding platform; wear the provided waterproof suit or full rain gear.
  • 2
Beach or community landingZodiacs either beach directly on gravel shores for tundra hikes, or pull alongside a small wharf in communities like Pond Inlet or Pangnirtung.
  • 3
Follow expedition team guidanceAll landings are managed by naturalist guides. Polar bear watch is always in effect; stay with the group and follow wildlife protocols.
  • 4
Return to ship on scheduleWeather and ice can change rapidly. Ships enforce strict boarding deadlines — your expedition staff will communicate exact recall times each morning.

💡 Pro move: Zodiac rides can be cold and wet even in summer. Waterproof gloves and boots are essential. Ships carry extra gear, but bring your own if possible.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Baffin Island has no dedicated cruise infrastructure; all access is by Zodiac from anchored expedition vessels.

Insider Tips

  • 🧊
Layer up, even in August. Air temps on Baffin Island average 5–10°C in summer and drop fast with wind chill. Wool mid-layers + waterproof outer shell is the minimum.
  • 💳
Cash is useful in hamlets. The Northern Store accepts cards, but small vendors and artists may prefer cash (CAD). ATMs are not always reliable in remote communities.
  • 🐻‍❄️
Polar bear country — always. Never wander alone onshore. Expedition teams carry deterrents and conduct formal bear watches; this is not just protocol, it's essential safety.
  • 📱
No cell coverage offshore. Satellite phone or ship's communications only at sea. Some hamlets have limited service. Save maps offline before departing.
  • 🎨
Buy Inuit art directly from artists when possible. Pangnirtung tapestries and Pond Inlet carvings are authentic and support local makers. Certificates of authenticity are available.
