  • 3
Enter the old city via Porte de l'OullePass through the ring of 14th-century ramparts and you're immediately in the historic centre. Place de l'Horloge and Palais des Papes are a 10-minute walk straight ahead.

History

Palais des Papes & Old City Walking Tour

Europe's largest Gothic palace dominated Christendom for 70 years when the papacy relocated from Rome in 1309. An audioguide or guided tour brings the cavernous halls and papal apartments to life. Pair with the adjacent Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms and the Rocher des Doms garden above.

Iconic

Pont Saint-Bénézet (Pont d'Avignon)

The 12th-century bridge that inspired the French nursery rhyme extended 22 arches across the Rhône — floods destroyed most of it in the 17th century. Four arches and a riverside chapel survive. Short visit but utterly photogenic, and visible from your ship.

History

Pont du Gard Roman Aqueduct

Hilltop Villages — Gordes, Roussillon & Les Baux

Provence's limestone country east and south of Avignon is studded with impossibly pretty hilltop villages. In the Luberon, Gordes is a tiered stone village near the Sénanque Abbey lavender fields and Roussillon sits on vivid ochre cliffs; in the Alpilles to the south, Les Baux-de-Provence crowns a ruined citadel ridge. Most full-day tours pair the Luberon or the Alpilles rather than covering both.

Les Halles d'Avignon Market

Insider Tips

  • 🎟️
Book Palais des Papes in advance. It's the must-do in Avignon — queues at the ticket desk can be 30-45 minutes in peak season. Online booking is straightforward.
  • 🍷
Wine tour pick-up is at the quay. Most Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Luberon excursions pick up directly at the riverside quayside — confirm the exact point with your operator.
  • ☀️
Provence sun is fierce in summer. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water — the old city has little shade between monuments. The Rocher des Doms garden is a welcome cool escape.
  • 🎵
Festival d'Avignon runs mid-July. If you're docking during the world-famous theatre festival the city is packed and hotel rates soar — but the street performances are free and spectacular.
  • 💶
Cash for markets. Les Halles and small village vendors often prefer cash. ATMs are plentiful inside the city walls on Rue de la République.
