Getting Ashore

Augusta is an Ohio River town in Bracken County, Kentucky, not Augusta in Maine or Georgia. Confirm your ship’s actual landing, gangway or tender arrangements and permitted shore exit; the map is town-area orientation only.

Getting Ashore in Augusta

  • 1
Confirm actual shore accessFollow your ship’s confirmed landing, gangway or tender and assistance instructions. A town waterfront, ferry landing or public park is not a universal assigned cruise berth; water levels and operations can affect access.
  • 2
Pick up a map at the CabooseAsk Augusta’s local tourism office or welcome centre about current walking-map availability and opening hours. Use permitted town routes after confirming your actual shore exit; a map link is not proof of an open visitor facility.
  • 3
Plan your route and returnConfirm routes, gradients, current attraction access and any transport from your actual shore exit. Do not assume every attraction is a short flat walk from a single dock; allow a generous all-aboard return buffer.

💡 Pro move: The Jenny Ann ferry links Augusta, Kentucky with Boude’s Landing, one mile west of Higginsport, Ohio. Confirm current operation, category fare, cash/payment requirements, vehicle or passenger inclusions and the return departure at 606-756-3291 before planning a crossing. The city’s online prices are explicitly dated August 1, 2022, not a new 2026 tariff. Allow a generous return-to-ship buffer.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Confirm current sailings, the actual landing and shore access with your cruise line. American Queen Voyages has ceased operations and is not a current caller; historic operator names do not establish a present-day berth.

Insider Tips

  • 🕐
Call time is short: Augusta is a half-day port for most itineraries. Prioritize Baker-Bird Winery and the Civil War walk — you can do both comfortably in 3-4 hours.
  • 💵
Bring small cash: Many small shops and the ferry are cash-preferred. There's an ATM in town but it can run dry on ship days.
  • 🥃
Baker-Bird fills up fast: When a river cruise ship is in port, the distillery gets crowded. Head there first or last rather than midday.
  • ⛴
Ferry tip: The Augusta Ferry is a working vehicle ferry, not a tourist boat — crossings happen when it's ready, not on a fixed schedule. Check at the landing before counting on a specific departure.
  • 📅
Jail visits need advance notice: The 1811 Augusta Jail isn't open walk-in. Contact the Augusta/Bracken County Tourism Office (+1 606-756-2183) ahead of time if you want inside.
