Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

The last great wilderness on Earth. No ports, no piers, no crowds — just glaciers that calve into silence, penguin colonies that outnumber your ship, and the kind of quiet that changes you.

⚓ Zodiac landing (expedition) or scenic only (large ships)🕒 Voyage: 10–24 days from Ushuaia or Punta Arenas💵 USD on board🗣️ International crew🌡️ Season: November – March
Ship Size Matters
Ships under 500 passengers can land via Zodiac. Larger ships cruise scenically only — no shore access under IAATO rules.
Zodiac Landings
Max 100 passengers ashore at any one site at a time. Landings rotate in groups throughout the day.
Getting There
Most voyages depart Ushuaia, Argentina (Drake Passage, 2 days each way) or fly-cruise from Punta Arenas to skip the Drake.
Best Wildlife
Gentoo, chinstrap & Adélie penguins, humpback & minke whales, leopard seals, and vast seabird colonies.

Getting Ashore

How you experience Antarctica depends entirely on your ship size — there are two fundamentally different types of voyage.

Expedition vs Scenic: Choose Your Antarctica

  • 1
Expedition ships (<500 passengers) — land via ZodiacIAATO (the international Antarctic operator association) limits landings to ships carrying fewer than 500 passengers. You board inflatable Zodiac boats from the ship's gangway and go ashore in rotating groups — never more than 100 people on a landing site at once. You walk among penguin colonies, approach glaciers on foot, and get genuinely close to the continent. This is what most people picture when they dream of Antarctica.
  • 2
Large ships (500+ passengers) — scenic cruising onlyShips carrying 500 or more passengers cannot make IAATO-certified landings. Instead they cruise the peninsula, Lemaire Channel, and iceberg-filled bays from the deck. Breathtaking — and still a bucket-list experience — but you never set foot on the continent. These voyages tend to be significantly less expensive.
  • 3
Zodiac excursions and kayakingExpedition ships also offer Zodiac cruises through iceberg fields and kayaking alongside glaciers as optional activities. Some operators add camping on the ice or snowshoeing. Check what's included vs extra cost when booking.
  • 4
The Drake Passage vs fly-cruiseClassic voyages cross the Drake Passage from Ushuaia — roughly 48 hours each way, famously rough (the 'Drake Shake') or sometimes glassy (the 'Drake Lake'). Fly-cruise options fly you to King George Island and join the ship there, saving 4 days of sailing. Costs more, but you maximize time on the peninsula.

💡 Pro move: Reputable expedition operators include Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Ponant, Silversea, Aurora Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, and Hapag-Lloyd Expeditions.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There are no piers or ports in Antarctica — all access is by Zodiac inflatable from anchor.

Top Excursions

Antarctic expedition activities are unlike anything else in cruising — most require no advance booking, just layers and waterproof trousers.

Wildlife

Zodiac Landing — Penguin Colony

Step ashore at a working penguin rookery — gentoos, chinstraps, or Adélies depending on your location. Penguins are fearless and curious; you stay 5m back by rule, but they often close the gap themselves. The noise, smell, and sheer number of birds is overwhelming in the best way.

⏱ 2-3 hrs🚶 Easy walking on rocky/icy shore📷 Unmissable

Nature

Lemaire Channel & Iceberg Alley

The Lemaire Channel — 11km of water squeezed between towering cliffs and glaciers — is one of the most photographed passages on Earth. Stand on deck as the ship threads between walls of ice. Available to all ships, expedition and scenic alike.

⏱ 2-4 hrs sailing🚢 All ships📷 Iconic

Wildlife

Whale Watching from Zodiac

Humpback and minke whales feed in Antarctic waters throughout the season. Zodiac whale watches get you far closer than deck viewing — engines off, floating silently as a humpback surfaces metres away. Leopard seals on ice floes are a common bonus.

⏱ 1-2 hrs🚤 Expedition ships only🐋 Humpback & minke

Adventure

Polar Plunge

A rite of passage on expedition ships — jump into Antarctic seawater (around 0°C/32°F) from the gangway or Zodiac platform. Completely voluntary, over in seconds, and gives you bragging rights for life. A rope and crew are right there.

Port Lockroy — Penguin Post Office

A restored British research station from 1944 on Goudier Island, now run by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. Buy souvenirs, send a postcard home (it will actually arrive), and walk among the gentoo penguin colony that nests around the buildings.

Deception Island — Active Volcano

A caldera you actually sail into through a narrow gap called Neptune's Bellows. Inside: an eerie flooded volcanic crater with steaming beaches, rusted whaling station ruins, and thousands of chinstrap penguins on the surrounding hills. Some expeditions offer a hot-spring swim on the volcanic beach.

⏱ 3-4 hrs🌋 Active caldera🚤 Zodiac or walk ashore

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

There are no marked trails in Antarctica — shore time means guided walks among penguins and ice on expedition landings.

Neko Harbour — Glacier Walk

Expedition landing · moderate · 1-2 hrs

One of the few places you can genuinely set foot on the Antarctic continent (not just the surrounding islands). Walk up a snow slope for a panoramic view over the bay. Glaciers calve directly into the water below — the thunder of ice is constant.

Half Moon Island — Chinstrap Colony

Expedition landing · easy · 1-2 hrs

A crescent-shaped island in the South Shetlands with a dense chinstrap penguin colony and an Argentine refuge hut. Easy walking on rocky ground, with views across to Livingston Island. Weddell seals often haul out on the beach.

Insider Tips

  • 🧥
Layer aggressively. Weather changes in minutes. Base layer, mid layer, waterproof outer, warm hat, waterproof gloves, and wool socks in rubber boots (usually provided by expedition operators for Zodiac landings). Wind is the real enemy.
  • 📷
Camera batteries die in the cold. Bring spares and keep them in an inner pocket against your body. Waterproof your camera bag for Zodiac spray. A 200mm+ telephoto covers wildlife; wide angle gets the scale.
  • 🚢
Book 12-18 months ahead. The best expedition ships and cabins sell out fast, especially for Christmas/New Year and February peak. January-February is warmest with the longest daylight.
  • 💊
Prepare for the Drake. Get a prescription seasickness patch before you go — scopolamine works well. The Drake can be genuinely rough over two days. Most expedition operators will have medication on board too.
  • 🐧
The 5-metre rule. IAATO rules require you stay at least 5m from wildlife. The penguins haven't read the rules — if they approach you, stand still. Don't crouch down or block their path to the sea.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚤 Zodiac Inflatable Boat

Included in cruise

All shore landings are conducted via Zodiac inflatable boats operated by expedition staff. This is the only way to reach land from the ship.

🚁 Helicopter (select ships)

Varies by operator

A small number of expedition ships (e.g., Ultramarine) offer helicopter-assisted landings at otherwise inaccessible sites. Typically an add-on or included depending on the vessel.

🥾 On Foot (guided)

Included in cruise

All land movement is on foot, guided by qualified expedition naturalists. IAATO regulations limit group sizes and require guides to accompany all passengers ashore.

🏔️ Optional Activities (kayak, snowshoe, camping)

–,400+ per activity

Many operators offer optional add-on activities such as sea kayaking, snowshoeing, or overnight camping on the ice. Prices vary by operator and activity.
