Nature

Geysir Andernach Boat Trip

Board an excursion boat from the Andernach waterfront to the Namedyer Werth river peninsula, where a CO₂-driven cold-water geyser erupts up to ~60 metres high — the tallest cold-water geyser in the world (Guinness-recognized). Created by a 1903 borehole and powered by volcanic carbon dioxide dissolved in cold groundwater, it erupts on a roughly 90–110 minute cycle.

Runder Turm & Medieval City Walls

The Runder Turm (Round Tower) is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval defensive towers in Germany, built in the mid-15th century (round section begun before 1440, upper octagonal stage completed 1448–1453). Standing about 56 m tall, it anchors a substantial stretch of the original city wall that still encircles much of the Old Town — a genuine medieval fortification you can walk beside.

Iconic

Alter Kran (Old Crane)

This 16th-century stone treadwheel crane (built 1554–1561, replacing an earlier wooden one) on the Rhine riverbank is one of the best-preserved historic river cranes in Europe. It loaded and unloaded trading ships on the Rhine for some 350 years until 1911 — today it's an iconic landmark right at the waterfront.

Insider Tips

  • 🌊
Book the geyser early. The Geysir Andernach boat trip is the highlight of the port and sells out on busy call days. Check your ship's excursion desk or book via the pier booth when you step ashore.
  • 💶
Cash is useful. Germany is still heavily cash-oriented outside tourist centers. ATMs are available near the market square; bring some euros for the geyser boat ticket, café stops, and small shops.
  • 🚶
Everything is walkable. The Alter Kran, Runder Turm, church, and market square are all within 10–15 minutes of the dock on flat terrain. No shuttle or taxi needed for the Old Town.
  • 🕒
Time the geyser. The Namedyer Werth geyser erupts on a roughly 90–110 minute cycle. Ask at the boat pier what the next eruption time is before buying your ticket — you want to arrive just before it fires.
  • 🏰
Koblenz is doable if you have time. With a longer call (8+ hrs), a taxi or regional bus to Koblenz is very manageable. But confirm your all-aboard time carefully — river cruise schedules are strict.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walk

Free

River ships dock along the Rhine promenade close to the Old Town. The Alter Kran, Rhine Gate, market square, churches, and medieval walls are generally a short, flat walk from the quay.

🚖 Taxi

~€8–€15 for short local rides

Standard local taxis are the practical choice for short hops beyond the center. Published taxi calculators list a base fare around €3.80 plus about €2.20/km, so confirm the fare or meter before leaving the dock.

🚆 Regional Train

~€5–€13 one-way to Koblenz

Andernach has regional rail service to Koblenz for a DIY side trip. Check VRM/DB times and return connections carefully against your all-aboard time.

🚌 Local Bus

VRM fare varies by zones

VRM buses cover Andernach and nearby towns, but they are ordinary local services rather than cruise shuttles. Use the VRM planner for exact stops and fares if you are heading outside the walkable center.

🚢 Geysir Excursion Boat

Ticketed attraction; varies by season

For Andernach's headline geyser visit, passengers usually take the official boat from the waterfront to the Namedyer Werth peninsula. Book early on busy cruise-call days and check the next departure before committing.
