Culture

U'mista Cultural Centre

The centrepiece of any Alert Bay visit. This world-renowned museum houses repatriated Potlatch regalia — ceremonial masks, coppers, and rattles confiscated by the Canadian government in 1921 and returned decades later. The collection is displayed in the traditional order of a Potlatch ceremony.

World's Tallest Totem Pole & 'Namgis Big House

A 20-minute walk from the dock brings you to the 173-foot 'Namgis totem pole — the world's tallest — adjacent to the traditional Big House (Gukwdzi). During summer (July–August, Thu–Sat), the T̓sasała Cultural Group performs traditional dances inside.
