Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Pre-book transport: Taxis are scarce and must be reserved weeks in advance. Ship excursions are often the easiest option for reaching beaches and ruins.
  • 🌦️
Layer up: Outer Hebrides weather changes fast — four seasons in one hour is not an exaggeration. Bring a windproof and waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast.
  • 🦟
Midges in summer: In calm, warm conditions (July–August) tiny biting midges are active. Pack Smidge repellent or Avon Skin So Soft, a local favourite.
  • 📅
Sunday closures: Most shops, cafes, and fuel stations are closed on Sundays. Plan food and provisions accordingly — the hotel may still serve food.
  • 📶
Signal is sparse: Mobile data and voice signal drop off quickly outside the village. Download offline maps before you go ashore.
