Getting Ashore on Leros

  • 1
Lakki pier (most ships)Walk straight off the ship onto a flat waterfront promenade — the town center is a 5–10 min stroll. Taxis wait at the pier entrance.
  • 2
Agia Marina tender (small/expedition ships)Tenders land directly in the picturesque harbor. You step ashore in the heart of the village with the castle visible above.
  • 3
Getting around the islandOnly ~15–20 taxis serve the whole island — they go fast on busy call days. Renting a scooter, ATV, or car at the port is the best way to see the whole island.

💡 Pro move: Leros is hilly. The climb from Agia Marina or Platanos to the castle involves steep cobblestone paths and many stairs — wear sturdy shoes.

Insider Tips

  • 🚕
Book a taxi early. There are only ~15–20 taxis on the island. If you want one for touring, ask your ship's desk for a local number or rent a scooter/ATV at the pier.
  • 💶
Carry cash. Cards work at restaurants and larger shops, but museums, small cafes, and taxi fares often need cash. ATMs are in Agia Marina and Lakki.
  • 🏰
Lakki vs. the villages. Lakki is architecturally unique but quiet. For atmosphere and food, walk or taxi to Panteli, Agia Marina, or Platanos — 5–10 minutes away.
  • 🦑
Eat seafood at Panteli beach. Leros has one of the largest fishing fleets in the Aegean. The tavernas on Panteli sand serve the freshest octopus, red mullet, and sea urchin you'll find anywhere.
  • 🥐
Try local specialties. Look for pougi (almond-honey pastry), soumada (sweet almond drink), and guava jam — Leros is the only part of Greece where guavas grow.
