Insider Tips

  • 🚲
Watch for bikes — they always have right of way. Never walk in the red-paved bike lanes; cyclists move fast and won't slow down for tourists.
  • 💳
Go cashless. Many Dutch shops, museums, and buses only accept card. Contactless Visa/Mastercard works everywhere — you may not need cash at all.
  • 🧀
Try Leidse Kaas — Leiden's own cumin-spiced cheese, sold at the Saturday canal market and in most delicatessens. It's genuinely distinct from other Dutch cheese.
  • 🐟
Eat herring the Dutch way from a canal stall: raw, topped with diced onion, or in a bun (broodje haring). It's mild, fresh, and a true local experience.
  • ☁️
Weather is unpredictable in the Netherlands year-round. Pack a compact rain layer — most sights are outdoors or require short walks between buildings.
