Insider Tips

  • 💷
British pounds only. Larne is in Northern Ireland — part of the UK — so euros are not accepted. Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted, including in taxis and small shops.
  • 🌧
Pack a waterproof. Antrim weather is famously unpredictable — a sunny morning can turn squally in an hour. Layers and a compact rain jacket are non-negotiable, especially if you're doing the Gobbins or Causeway.
  • 🎟
Book the Gobbins in advance. This cliff path is guided only and sells out well ahead of cruise calls. If you want to do it, book online at thegobbins.com before your ship arrives.
  • 🚂
DIY to Belfast is easy. Larne Harbour Station is steps from the port terminal. An hourly train gets you to Belfast city center in ~50 minutes. This is one of the easiest and cheapest independent options on the Antrim coast.
  • 🏰
Carrickfergus is underrated. If the Causeway is too far or too crowded, hop the train 25 minutes to Carrickfergus — a magnificent Norman castle right on the sea, with a lovely town square for lunch.
