Getting Ashore

Both terminals are active industrial cargo ports — you cannot walk to the city. Shuttles or ride-hailing are your only options.

Getting from the Ship to Kuching

  • 1
Take the cruise line shuttleMost ships run a paid (occasionally free) shuttle dropping passengers at the Kuching Waterfront near the Grand Margherita Hotel. This is by far the easiest option.
  • 2
Use Grab (ride-hailing)Download the Grab app before arrival. Walk to the port's main gate — drivers usually cannot come dockside — and book a ride into the city (MYR 30–50 from Senari, MYR 15–25 from Pending).
  • 3
Allow ample return timeThe drive back to Senari Terminal can hit afternoon traffic on city bridges. Build in at least 60–75 minutes to return from downtown before all-aboard.

💡 Pro move: Tidal swings on the Sarawak River can reach 5+ metres, occasionally affecting docking times. Check the ship's daily newsletter for any schedule adjustments.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Kuching has no dedicated cruise terminal — ships berth at working cargo facilities, with larger vessels assigned to Senari and smaller ships to Pending.

Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Bring mosquito repellent — you're in equatorial Borneo. Essential for any excursion involving parks or jungle areas.
  • 💱
Carry cash (MYR) — street food, water taxis (penambang), and small souvenir shops are cash-only. ATMs are plentiful downtown.
  • 🍜
Eat Sarawak Laksa — it's the signature dish of Kuching, famously called the "Breakfast of the Gods" by Anthony Bourdain. Find it at any local kopitiam (coffee shop) near Carpenter Street.
  • Plan for the drive back — traffic across Kuching's river bridges can back up in the afternoon. Allow at least 60–75 minutes to return to Senari Terminal before all-aboard.
  • 📱
Download Grab before you arrive — it's Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app and far cheaper than negotiating with taxis near the port gate.
