Insider Tips

  • 🧴
Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory. Palau bans chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone/octinoxate. Confiscation happens at customs. Pack mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreen or buy it in Koror.
  • 🪙
Cash in USD is king. Palau uses US dollars. Small restaurants, taxis, and local markets prefer cash. ATMs are available in central Koror but can run out.
  • 🚕
Always agree on taxi fares before you get in. Taxis have no meters. Typical fare from Malakal dock to downtown is $10-15 USD each way.
  • 📋
Book Jellyfish Lake in advance. Entry requires a government permit (~$100 USD), usually bundled into tour prices. Tours sell out — book before your cruise or on the ship.
  • 🍺
Drop Off Bar & Grill near Malakal dock is a great post-excursion stop — local Red Rooster draft beer, fresh fish and chips, and an expat crowd. Easy walk back to tender.
