Getting Ashore

Getting Ashore at Kirinda

  • 1
Large cruise ships (Hambantota Port)Most cruise lines calling 'Kirinda' in their itinerary actually dock at Hambantota International Port, about 68 km west by road. Shore excursion buses and pre-booked taxis wait dockside for the roughly 70-minute drive to Kirinda and Yala.
  • 2
Expedition & small ships (tender)Smaller vessels may anchor offshore and run tender boats directly into Kirinda Fishery Harbour. The village, beach, and temple are within a 10–15 minute walk from the tender landing.
  • 3
Transport in the areaTuk-tuks are available for short hops around Kirinda. Pre-book a driver or cruise excursion for Yala National Park, Bundala, or Tissamaharama — public transport is slow and unreliable.

💡 Pro move: There are no ATMs in Kirinda village. Carry Sri Lankan Rupees (or USD/EUR for tour operators) before you leave the port.

Insider Tips

  • 🐆
Book Yala early. Jeep quotas fill up fast — especially on cruise call days. Reserve your safari in advance through your ship or a vetted operator.
  • 👗
Cover up for the temple. Shoulders and knees must be covered at Kirinda Vihara. The rocks get scorching hot — bring thick socks, as shoes come off at the entrance.
  • 💵
Bring Sri Lankan Rupees. No ATMs in Kirinda village — the nearest are in Tissamaharama (20 min). USD and EUR are accepted by tour operators but not small local vendors or tuk-tuks.
  • ☀️
Kirinda is hot and sunny. This is Sri Lanka's dry zone. High-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and at least 1.5 litres of water per person are non-negotiable.
  • 🥥
Try a thambili (king coconut). Orange coconuts sold by roadside vendors are sweet, cold, and the best natural rehydration option. About 50–80 LKR each.
