Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Kawaihae's industrial commercial pier; a port shuttle carries passengers to the security gate where you can walk, take a taxi, or join a tour.

Getting Ashore at Kawaihae Harbor

  • 1
Shuttle to the gateThe cruise line or port authority runs a short shuttle from the gangway to the outer security gate — pedestrians cannot cross the active cargo yard on foot.
  • 2
On foot or by transportFrom the gate, Kawaihae Shopping Center (with restaurants and shops) is a 10–15 min walk along Akoni Pule Highway. Puʻukoholā Heiau is 15–20 min south on foot.
  • 3
Pre-arrange transport for beachesUber and Lyft are unreliable here. Book a ship excursion or private tour ahead of time for Spencer Beach, Hāpuna Beach, or Waimea — no taxis wait at the pier.

💡 Pro move: Kawaihae is hot and exposed. Carry plenty of water and wear reef-safe sunscreen from the moment you step ashore.

Insider Tips

  • ☀️
Sun is serious here. Kawaihae is one of the driest, sunniest spots in Hawaii. Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and a full water bottle are non-negotiable from the moment you step off the shuttle.
  • 🚗
Pre-arrange transport. Uber and Lyft rarely serve this area. If you're not on a ship excursion, book a private tour or taxi in advance — you may be stranded at the shopping center otherwise.
  • 🦈
Shark sanctuary at the heiau. The shallow bay beside Puʻukoholā Heiau is a natural shark sanctuary — blacktip reef sharks are frequently visible from shore. Don't swim there, but do look.
  • 💨
Mumuku winds. The Kohala coast is famous for strong, gusty downslope winds. Hold on to hats and light items — conditions can change quickly.
  • 🤿
Best snorkeling is at Spencer Beach, just 1.5 miles south — calm, reef-protected water and abundant fish. Free entry and lifeguards on duty most days.
