Getting Ashore

Kalmar has two docking scenarios depending on ship size — both land you within a short walk of the castle.

Getting Ashore in Kalmar

  • 1
Small ships — Elevatorkajen berthVessels under 145 m dock at the city-centre quay. Kalmar Castle is a 5-minute walk north; the old town and Cathedral are 10 minutes on foot.
  • 2
Large ships — tender serviceLarger cruise ships anchor in Kalmar Sound and run tenders to the purpose-built cruise jetty (opened 2022) near the harbour front. The jetty has step-free access and drops you 100–200 m from the city centre cafes.
  • 3

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Sweden is cashless. Don't bother getting Swedish kronor — every café, shop, and public toilet accepts Visa/Mastercard contactless and Apple/Google Pay.
  • 🏰
Book the castle in advance. Kalmar Slott sells out on busy summer days. Check kalmarslott.se before your call date.
  • 🌉
Öland is doable but time-sensitive. The bridge bus takes ~30 min each way; allow at least 4 hours ashore on the island. Only attempt this on longer port calls (8+ hrs).
  • 🥟
Try kroppkakor. These potato dumplings stuffed with pork are Småland's culinary signature. Look for them at Larmtorget restaurants.
  • 🕒
Shops open late on weekdays, early close Saturday. Boutiques often open at 10:00 and close ~16:00 on Saturdays; most are closed Sunday.
