Getting Ashore

There is no pier on the Isle of Noss — how you arrive depends entirely on your ship type.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Expedition ships — Zodiac landingSmall expedition vessels anchor off Noss. Passengers board Zodiacs and land at Gungstie, a low-lying rock jetty near the warden's cottage on the southern shore. Landings are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice.
  • 2
Zodiac cruising optionIf conditions are too rough to land, Zodiacs cruise the base of the Noup cliffs instead — often equally spectacular. Check with your expedition team on the day.
  • 3
From Lerwick (large ships)Large cruise ships dock or tender at Lerwick on the Shetland mainland. From Lerwick, book a wildlife boat tour (e.g. Seabirds-and-Seals) that sails around Noss — no landing required. Alternatively, take the Lerwick–Bressay ferry (7 min) then cross Noss Sound via the small NatureScot inflatable ferry (seasonal, mid-May to late Aug, daily except Mon & Thu, weather permitting).

💡 Pro move: Public landings are restricted to protect nesting birds. Always follow NatureScot and your expedition leader's guidance. No facilities exist on the island.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Isle of Noss has no cruise pier — access is by Zodiac from anchored expedition ships, or by boat tour and small ferry for passengers calling at Lerwick.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

The Noss Circular Walk is the only real trail on the island — rugged, scenic, and populated by aggressive bonxies near their nests.

Noss Circular Walk

~5 mi | 2.5-3 hrs | Moderate-strenuous | Start: Gungstie jetty

From the landing at Gungstie, head east past seal haul-outs, climb through the bonxie nesting grounds (hold a stick above your head — they dive-bomb the highest point), reach the Noup clifftop, walk the clifftop south along the gannet colony, then loop back west. Ends at Gungstie.

Gungstie Shore Walk (short)

0.5 mi | 15-20 mins | Easy | Start: Gungstie jetty

A short walk from the landing to the seal haul-out rocks and the warden's cottage. Gives a taste of island life and wildlife without the full hike. Good if Zodiac time is limited.

Insider Tips

  • 🐦
Bonxie defence: Great Skuas nest on the central moorland and will dive-bomb your head. Carry a walking pole, stick, or umbrella and hold it above head height — they target the highest point.
  • 🌧️
Dress for Shetland: Even in July, expect cold wind and rain. Bring waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece layers, and waterproof hiking boots with grip. There is nowhere to shelter on the island.
  • 📷
Protect your camera: Zodiac salt spray is brutal. Pack a dry bag or rain cover for cameras and binoculars before boarding.
  • 🚫
No facilities: There are no cafes, shops, or toilets on Noss (a basic composting toilet exists at the warden's cottage only). Bring water and snacks from your ship and pack out all rubbish.
  • 📅
Season matters: The seabird spectacle peaks May–July. By late August most birds have departed. Puffins arrive late April; gannets stay until September.
