One of Scotland's most remote inhabited islands, Canna is a car-free sanctuary of basalt cliffs, ancient Celtic crosses, and vast seabird colonies — visited only by small expedition ships and yachts.
Canna has no deep-water berth — your ship anchors in the sheltered natural harbour and tenders run passengers to Canna Pier.
💡 Pro move: Tender schedules are controlled by your ship — check your daily programme for first and last tender times before heading far inland.
Cruise ships anchor in Canna Harbour; all passenger transfer is by tender to the island's small stone pier.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition/boutique lines (Hebridean Island Cruises, Noble Caledonia, Hurtigruten, Ponant) | Anchor in Canna Harbour — tender to Canna Pier📍 | Tendered |
| Private yachts & small charter vessels | Visitor moorings in Canna Harbour (10 moorings up to 35ft)📍 | Tendered |
Canna is entirely explored on foot — shore excursions here are guided island walks, wildlife talks led by the NTS ranger, and birdwatching outings to the puffin colonies.
Cross the bridge to the neighbouring island of Sanday and follow the coastal path to the southern cliffs, home to one of Scotland's most accessible puffin colonies. Guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes nest here in huge numbers May–July. Sea eagles and golden eagles patrol overhead year-round.
Find Canna wildlife tours →Follow the path west from the pier to the dramatic Coroghon Castle — a 17th-century stone tower perched atop a sheer volcanic stack, historically used to imprison the wife of a Clanranald (MacDonald) clan chief. Continue to the 8th–9th-century Celtic Canna Cross near Canna House, one of the finest early-Christian carved crosses in the Hebrides.
Find Canna history tours →Compass Hill, northeast of the pier, is a volcanic formation so rich in iron ore that passing ships' compasses are famously thrown off course. The steep but rewarding hike to the summit opens up panoramic views of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Skye, and on clear days, the Outer Hebrides.
Find Canna guided hikes →A longer walk across Canna and over the bridge to the far shore of Sanday rewards with one of the Hebrides' most pristine beaches — white shell sand, turquoise water, and views out to the Isle of Rum. Virtually deserted on even busy cruise days.
Find Canna beach walks →The National Trust for Scotland employs a seasonal ranger on Canna who offers guided walks covering the island's Gaelic history, wildlife, sustainable farming, and conservation work. Often bookable through your ship or the NTS visitor hub at the harbour.
Ask ship excursion desk for NTS ranger walks →All of Canna is explored on foot — even a short 30-minute wander from the pier takes in remarkable scenery, history, and wildlife.
A gentle intro walk from the pier along the southern shore past the Community Shop and Café Canna, through the woodlands around Canna House Gardens to the early-Christian Celtic Canna Cross, and back via the shoreline.
Head west from the pier to the dramatic cliff-top ruin of Coroghon Castle, then loop back via the road bridge to Sanday for views of the Rocket Church (St Edward's) and the seabird-rich coastal rocks.
