Insider Tips

  • Watch ship time vs. local time. Quintana Roo does not observe Daylight Saving Time. Confirm your ship's departure time in local time — it could be 1 hour different from what you expect.
  • 🛺
Book golf carts early. Rental shops near the terminal sell out fast on busy days. Bring a valid driver's license — it's required. Inspect the cart for damage before driving off.
  • 💵
Pay in pesos for better value. USD is widely accepted, but you'll often get a poor exchange rate. ATMs are near the terminal; beach clubs and taxis prefer cash.
  • 🌊
Use reef-safe sunscreen only. Conventional sunscreens are banned in eco-parks and discouraged on Playa Norte to protect the reef ecosystem. Bring reef-safe or buy locally.
  • 🐋
Whale sharks are seasonal. Isla Mujeres is one of the world's best spots to swim with whale sharks — but only June through mid-September. Outside that window, focus on snorkeling and MUSA.
